Docile soft beauty

Wow… this is Ju-ju…

Our daughter. Quelle belle âme….

One thing is certain, when you are with her, you laugh a lot.

Since her birth.

Down children are a blessing!!! You just can’t imagine.

Ju-ju will bring us from the most docile soft beauty of a child into the most vivid imagination daily life can bring. Totally amazing. My other 3 children were never even close.

Oh well… bragging again…

Donald H. Rumsfeld was sworn in as the 21st Secretary of Defense on January 20, 2001. Before assuming that post, he was once a Navy pilot. He was also the 13th Secretary of Defense. (Other roles: White House Chief of Staff, U.S. Ambassador to NATO, U.S. Congressman, Chief executive officer of two Fortune 500 companies, and so on...).

Following yesterday's partial elections in the US, (Democrats are getting a majority in the Congress), D. Rumsfeld resigns... à la Bush.

Well, the only thing I can say is: "Change is good..."

I am passionate about food…

You will notice that this Blog has 4 Labels only. This one is relating to my many “Passions”. I am passionate about food…

But I do have a “peeve” (allow me the pun – that’s my “beef”).

When it comes to genetically modified foods, there are number of objections that we hear all over the place. Yet, that is not even close to the problem I personally have with GMF. Let’s look at the usual objections and then I will share mine:

Objections to Genetically Modified Foods: (parenthesis are mine)

• Is it really necessary? (for a capitalist system, ya… but what about the consumer),
• Labeling should be compulsory (yes),
• Do we need genetically modified food? (jury is still out on that one),
• Should we be modifying genes at all? (moral issue),
• It's "playing God" or unnatural (says who…),
• It's wrong to mix genes from radically different organisms (says who…),
• Do we really know what we're doing? (good point),
• Have we evaluated the risks sufficiently? (most probably not),
• It is just going to provide luxuries for rich, and won't feed the Third World. (good point),
• Agriculture is already too technological. This will only make it worse. (possibly),
• There better ways to improve resistance and reduce chemicals on the land. (possibly),
• Do we have a real say in what's going on? (now that is an excellent concern),
• Big business is imposing on our freedom under the guise of free trade. (yes…),
• Government committees do not represent ordinary people enough (yes),
• Supermarkets act as enough of a voice (and the people, not enough…).

My added and main objection:

It doesn’t taste good!!!


Take a tomato for example. They have become tasteless… pretty but tasteless.

What about strawberries… Man, are they ever beautiful… but are bland…

For 3 years in a row, I have been doing this little experiment. I have been buying a basket of Ontario Peaches (local and in season) from either Loab or Loblaws (local supermarkets). Well, they are never ripe when you buy them… sooo… I leave them on our table in the kitchen. Every time, every year, the peaches will rot before the ripe… Something is wrong. They are also totally without juices… You see the problem is fruits and vegetables simply don’t taste what they used to taste when I was a kid… and I am not making this up.

The Government has to intervene…

Some would say: "Well, buy organic then...". Well... we now do but most people don't (more expensive) and thus... most people eat shit... simply because no one is controlling the quality of our food... Also, younger people can't even compare with what "real" fruits and vegetables are. They were never given a choice. They think our rasberries of today are the rasberries of nature. Not so. Huge difference. Something is wrong... and our politicians are doing NOTHING on this vital issue...

Our beloved daughter, M-C.

I am so proud to present in my personal blog our beloved daughter, M-C.

She is quite an amazing young women with a wonderful sense of humor and a most transparent temperament. With her, you never ask how she feels on one issue or another. She may have no opinion about it but that would be it. If she does, you will know it in no uncertain terms. I love this type person because there are no games with M-C. It is all genuine.

She is currently a student at University and she is a wonderful sister to her younger sister “Ju-ju” and her two older brothers. It’s just great to have her around and she remains a rare gem for her mother and me.

With her, we are blessed.

RIII Being Lost (next Québec Referendum)

The scene: a bar on Ste Catherine Street.

I was talking to a friend from Montréal recently and the unity question came to the forefront. That came up when we exhausted all the other subjects.

"So, what is the stand of the people of Québec on the Canadian unity issue these days?"

"They are fed up with it and people are far more interested in their pay and taxes than unity".

"Hum. But I read that even if the majority of Québécois would vote "no", the majority of French speaking Québécois still support sovereignty".

"Maybe… Give francophones RIII and they will go for it mostly to get rid of the issue. But the truth is, they are presently far more concerned with "real" problems, like the lack of sound medical service… They are also more interested about how the whole "possible upcoming recession" thing plays out. I don't know, it seems to me that people, especially in the Montréal area are just getting tired about the whole classic "unity" agenda.

"Are you saying that the unity issue is no longer an issue".

"No, I'm saying that the unity issue has become a frustrating issue and people simply don't want to talk about it. They think the Federal Government and the current Government are simply incompetent in dealing with the issue in a visionary aspect of a Plan A and because of that, most francophones will vote yes next time because Canada has clearly demonstrated to them that they are not worth the attention of the Federalists. In the meantime, they are struggling for their lives like all the other Canadians.

"Do you think we will ever solve the unity issue in Canada".

"We need a Plan A… but there is no plan A… only B, and C, and D… but eventually, the problem will arise and Québec will go on it's own. It has nothing to do with Canada. It has everything to do with their collective dignity. For example, this current discussion as to whether Québec is a Nation or not will never get the support of the rest of Canada...".

"Collective dignity"? What do you mean by that?"

"Québec is subjected to a majority of anglophones in Ottawa. They feel insecure in that position and believe the best way to ensure their collective freedom is to leave that relationship. They are becoming more and more convinced that they have no room in Canada as equal citizens. For example, the City of Ottawa refused to become officially bilingual, Toronto was trying for years to close the only francophone hospital outside Québec (Montfort Hospital) regardless of the need for French service and the West is talking separation. The status quo is simply no longer an alternative… yet, the Feds refuse to do anything about it."

Hum… So what would be the solution?

In the absence of Plan A, separation is the only logical outcome… but who cares… let's have another beer and let's talk about the Habs (Hockey)".

Our conversation on unity was drowned with a few nice cold Labbatt Bleue, Charlebois was singing about separation in the background and Montréal waitresses are incredibly beautiful. The sense I was getting was one of deep frustration. The lack of direction and courage on the part of Ottawa is slowly destroying this Country… and no one seems to be able to do anything about it.

I had enough of beer. I switched to Scotch.

FISHton... our son

I have to talk to you about FISHton. He is the mellowest dude you will ever find. When he was a child, he was simply perfect. As an adult... hum... well, "perfect" would push it... but he's pretty wonderful. Fish is a great percussionist (and able drummer), film maker, handsome piece of meat, still single as I write these words, very creative... Sorry to brag... That's what Dads do, I guess...

At any rate, this is "Fish" because his initials were FP and in primary school in Québec, "FP" stood mostly for Fisher Price. His friends started to call him "Fisher Price" for some time and the name "Fish" remained. We added "Fishton"... a derivative of "fiston" = "son".
